Trauma and complex lives

Now that schools are back and communities are gearing up for a fresh start following the summer, we at Adavu remain in the thick of supporting survivors. What has struck me is that the trauma of exploitation – and often a preceding lifetime of abuse, neglect and exploitation – can so often leave a tough tangle of complexities in a survivor’s life.  They may be heading successfully to enrolling at college, learning English, sending their children to school and nursery, gaining employment and making friends, and then a crisis (of any size) can trigger a sudden downward spiral.  It really is a slippery slope towards a life of being truly free and we are privileged to be just one part of this challenging journey.  But it is completely possible, one small step at a time, transforming lives.
